Homemade Sourdough Croutons
This recipe is easier then you think. Once you taste the quality of fresh, homemade croutons using clean ingredients, you will never use the store bought kind again.
If you need to purchase store bought croutons at any time, please look at the ingredients. You will be surprised at what is added in to make them shelf stable.
THE BASICS OF CROUTONS
Croutons are usually made from stale bread and butter. Feel free to use leftover, stale bread you have lying around the kitchen. However, I always use a fresh, organic loaf of sourdough to prepare croutons for my clients. The results are always fantastic using a fresh loaf.
DO I HAVE TO USE SOURDOUGH BREAD
You can experiment with any bread you like. However, if you are using a spongy, moist bread your cooking time may need to be adjusted.
Try a gluten-free or grain-free bread that is dry and most similar to a sourdough loaf, rustic loaf or classic wheat bread loaf.
THE QUALITY OF YOUR INGREDIENTS MATTER
When following recipes with limited ingredients, you want to choose quality ingredients with maximum flavor.
- When I prepare these croutons I use fresh, organic sourdough bread from Whole Foods Market or a local bakery.
- I choose Kerry Gold Unsalted Butter, Amish Butter, Finlandia Butter, Goat Butter or any small batch, grass fed butter available.
- I use real sea salt for healthy minerals, such as Redmond Salt.

Description
Make homemade sourdough croutons for optimum flavor. Add herbs and spices as desired to customize for any dish.
Ingredients
- 1 small loaf of organic, sourdough bread
- 1 stick of quality unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon of sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Using a bread nice, sliced the bread into 2-3 inch square pieces. The bread will shrink when cooking.
- Slice the butter into 4 pieces. In a large pan, melt the butter. Add the bread pieces and stir well.
- Add the bread pieces covered in butter to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 10-13 minutes, or until light brown and crispy.
Notes
Be sure to spread the bread out evenly on the baking sheet. If the bread is over crowded, it will steam, and not dry up to become crispy, brown croutons.

Hello, how long do these croutons keep for, and how do you store them?
whitney.aronoff@gmail.com says
I keep them for one week. I like to use a glass container with lid like pyrex or a plastic bag (I prefer the thick freezer style). I keep them out on the counter or in the pantry.
