INGREDIENTS FOR BUTTERMILK DRESSING
First time making a creamy dressing? It is easy.
To make this salad dressing, you will need the following ingredients.
Buttermilk or Whole Milk. As organic buttermilk is hard to find I often swap it for organic whole milk. I prefer organic raw whole milk in glass bottles when available.
Mayonnaise. I use Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo to avoid canola oil and added sugar found in other brands. You can also make your own if you want to control the ingredients.
Fresh lemon juice
Fresh chives
Sea salt
Coarse black pepper
HOW TO USE CREAMY BUTTERMILK DRESSING
I use this dressing on a variety of salads for my clients. It also makes a great dip and snack with carrots and celery. Here are a few suggestions on how to use this dressing.
- As a dip with carrots, celery and crudité
- On an iceberg salad or classic iceberg wedge
- With my California Chef’s Salad recipe
- As a substitute for blue cheese or thousand island dressing
- With charred romaine lettuce
- With an arugula salad
- As a dressing on a steak salad
- Drizzled over a rainbow sweet potato bowl
- With a butter lettuce salad
- As a dip with chicken thighs and wings
- As a dip with pizza
BUTTERMILK SUBSTITUTION? TRY WHOLE MILK
It is hard to find organic buttermilk. Often there is only one buttermilk brand and package size at the grocery store. If you don’t want to spend the money on buttermilk because you don’t know how to use the leftovers, then go with whole milk.
Follow the recipe as is when you swap buttermilk for whole milk. Add an extra tablespoon of lemon juice if you would like the dressing tarter.
WHAT TO DO WITH LEFTOVER BUTTERMILK
If you bought buttermilk to make this salad dressing, here are three ways to use it up.
- Make more buttermilk salad dressing
- Make cornbread, adding in place of the liquid called for in the recipe
- Marinate chicken, which tenderizes chicken thighs and breasts for fried chicken
CHEF TIP
This salad dressing stores well for two weeks in the fridge. Great for meal prep.
Use a small whisk to easily blend the ingredients together.
Use kitchen scissors to cut your chives instead of chopping with a knife.
For a California take on buttermilk dressing, blend with ½ a ripe avocado.
