Southern Style Blackberry Cobbler
Southern style blackberry cobbler recipe. This recipe is cake style, which is more traditionally found in the South, in comparison to the oat crumble cobblers.
This recipe was used for Chef Whitney Aronoff’s Starseed Kitchen Community Table Dinner at The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano on May 17, 2024.

INGREDIENTS FOR SOUTHERN STYLE COBBLER
- Blackberries (or peaches, strawberries, blueberries, etc)
- Organic flour
- Grass-finished butter
- Organic sugar (cane sugar, coconut sugar, maple crystals, etc)
- Organic whole milk, raw or A2
- Vanilla extract
- Sea salt
HOW TO GARNISH YOUR COBBLER
This cobbler was served family style with a large scoop of homemade raw milk cream whipped cream, a blackberry sauce, fresh rosemary, additional fresh blackberries and purple sage flowers. If you are serving this at a dinner party, try plating with any of the following ingredients.
- Homemade whipped cream (use raw cream or A2 cream and don’t add sugar)
- Blackberry sauce
- Fresh rosemary
- Edible flowers
- Purple sage flowers
- Vanilla bean ice cream
- Fresh blackberries

Description
Southern style blackberry cobbler with a cake finish in a cast iron skillet.
Ingredients
- 2–3 cups fresh blackberries
- 1/2 c butter (4 oz)
- 1 c self rising organic flour
- 1 c organic sugar (cane, coconut, maple, etc)
- 1 c organic whole milk (A2 or raw)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- whipped cream (optional)
- rosemary (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Place butter in the cast iron skillet and place in the oven till butter melts.
- Stir together flour, sugar, milk and vanilla in medium mixing bowl. Pour mix into cast iron skillet. Top with berries.
- Bake till cobbler is brown, and cooked through (test with a toothpick), 45-50 minutes.
- Garnish with whipped cream, blackberry sauce and fresh rosemary for more flavor.
Notes
For making this recipe in a large cast iron skillet as pictured, double recipe.
Substitute blackberries for other fruit such as peaches, blueberries and strawberries, or a mix of berries. This recipe does work with frozen fruit.
